Online Banking Security Upgrade

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Online Banking login security process changing?

On the evening of July 23, Northrim Bank is upgrading the overall security of our Online Banking platform. It is our commitment to keep your accounts safe. The new login security process complies with industry best practices, and will make it safer for you to monitor and manage your money while safeguarding against unauthorized access to your accounts.

What are the changes to login security?

There are two key changes that you will notice once the upgrade is complete:

  1. Northrim will ensure your Online Banking login is strong and meets the username and password requirements listed below. If your login does not meet these requirements, you will be prompted to create a new username and/or password.

    Username Requirements Password Requirements
    • Must be between 6 and 20 characters
    • Must contain at least one letter
    • Can contain numbers and/or these special characters: @$*_-=.!~
    • Cannot contain spaces
    • Must be between 8 and 32 characters
    • Must contain characters from two of the following categories:
      - Letters
      - Numbers
      - Special Characters

    • Cannot contain spaces
    • Cannot be a substring of the username

  2. We will implement a new requirement to verify your identity by phone or email when you log in to Online Banking. After entering your username and password, you will be asked to provide a phone number or email address. We will immediately send a verification code to your phone (via voice call or text message) or email that you will enter to complete your login process. You can opt to have your computer or mobile device remembered, so you do not need to repeat this step each time you log in. However, you must obtain a new verification code for each device you use to log in to Online Banking that is not remembered on the system. You may register as many computers and mobile devices as you wish. You should only register computers that are non-public and will be used regularly to access Northrim Online Banking.

Will I need to complete the security upgrade steps again if I use a different computer or device to access Online Banking?

No, registration is a one-time process. However, when you log in to Online Banking from a new computer or device you will be required to enter a verification code. The verification code will be delivered to the phone number or email address you set up during the registration process.

How will a verification code make my Online Banking account safer?

Northrim is implementing what is known as Multifactor Authentication (MFA), which means two or more different types, or factors, of authentication must be passed when logging in to online banking. This makes it more difficult for online phishers and attackers to access your online accounts. While this might seem unfamiliar, you actually use MFA every time you visit an ATM. When you access your account from any ATM, you need both your ATM card (something you have) and PIN (something you know).

We are using the same type of protection by using both your password (something you know) and the verification code sent to your phone/email (something you have) to access your online banking account. By doing this, even if someone manages to steal your password and tries to log in to an unregistered device, they would be unsuccessful because they would need your phone/email as well.

Am I required to complete this security upgrade?

Yes, the new security upgrade is a requirement for all Northrim Online Banking users. This upgrade will ensure your accounts and financial information is protected with the latest online security technology and safeguards available.

Do I need to have a cell phone to complete the security upgrade?

No, you can use any phone that accepts calls or texts. You can also slect to have the code sent via email.

What happened to security/challenge questions?

Challenge questions are not considered to be as secure as a one-time verification codes. The security of your accounts is of utmost importance to us, so we are moving from challenge questions to verification codes sent via phone.

Will I always need to use both my password and phone to access Online Banking?

The first time you log in from a new (unregistered) computer or mobile device, you will need to enter your username, password and the verification code. If you are accessing online banking from a private computer that you personally use, you can opt for the system to register your computer or mobile device for future logins. By doing this, you will not need to repeat the step of obtaining a verification code via phone or email, and you will only need your username and password at future logins from that device. You should only register computers that are non-public and will be used regularly to access Northrim Online Banking.

What happens when I log in from another computer or mobile device?

The first time you log in from a new computer or mobile device, you will need to enter your username, password and the verification code sent to your phone or email to log in to Online Banking. After entering your verification code, you will have the option to register the device.

How do I unregister a computer or mobile device?

If you previously registered a device and would like to unregister it, please call our Customer Service Center. In a future enhancement, you will have the ability to register and unregister your device inside Online Banking. Once you unregister a device you will be required to enter your password and a verification code the next time you log in to Online Banking from that device.

What if I forget my password?

If you forget your password, you can click the Forgot Password link on the homepage or Online Banking login screen. We will then ask you to enter one of the phone numbers we have on file and your username. A new password will be sent to your phone via voice call or text message. The forgotten password feature will only work if you previously registered your phone number as part of the new login security service. If you only use email to receive one-time verification codes, you will need to contact Customer Service Center for assistance resetting your password.

I completed the registration for the new security service, how can I now add a new phone number or email address as an option to receive my one-time verification codes?

You can update or add a new email address or phone number at which to receive verification codes by logging in to Online Banking and clicking on the My Profile link in the top right corner. Go to update security contacts from the My Profile screen.

I am travelling internationally and will not have access to my phone, what options do I have to receive my one-time verification code?

You have the option to add an international phone number to receive your verification code via voice call or text message. You also have the option to add an email address to receive your verification code via email.
